History
In 1883 Don Melchor Concha y Toro planted the first grape vines - originating from the renowned Bordeaux region of France in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Pirque, located just 27 kilometers from Santiago. At the same time, he built the emblematic Casona de Pirque as well as the winemaking and aging cellars of that era.

One hundred years later, Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, who was the president of Viña Concha y Toro at that time urged his son Rafael and the enologist of the time, Goetz Von Gersdorff, to visit the renowned French winemaker Emile Peynaud in Bordeaux, France. Their purpose was to present the Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the vineyard in Puente Alto, located on the northern bank of the Maipo River, just 4 kilometers from the traditional Casona de Pirque. Peynaud immediately recognized the excellence of the wines from this terroir and suggested that the renowned Bordeaux consultant, Jacques Boissenot be in charge of leading this project. The project took shape under the name of the winery's founder, Don Melchor, and its first wine was the 1987 vintage.

Don Melchor is considered one of the the first iconic wines of the Chilean industry and a true benchmark among premium wines in the world.

Vineyard
The Don Melchor vineyard is located in the acclaimed appellation of Puente Alto in the Alto Maipo Valley, at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, at an elevation of 650 meters above sea level, on the third northern terrace of the Maipo River. Its soil, poor in nutrients and at the same time of diverse constitution, is composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels, and at depth larger stones rounded by the millennia-long erosion caused by glaciers that advanced from the mountains into the valley carrying material that later formed the terraces. These soils ensure good drainage and low fertility, which restricts the vegetative growth of the plants, favoring the concentration and natural ripening of the clusters. The climate is Mediterranean semi-arid, with an average annual temperature of 14.4°C and an average rainfall of 335 mm. The vineyard covers 127 hectares: 112.67 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon; 1.28 hectares with Cabernet Franc, 2.45 hectares with Merlot, and 1.28 hectares with Petit Verdot.
