History
In 1987, the winemaker Heinrich Männle arrived in Chile from Germany with the determination to continue the successful winemaking tradition of his father's winery, Weingut Andreas Männle. This German family-owned business, founded in the early 20th century in the city of Durbach, has maintained its prestige to this day.
Once established in Chile, he conducted an exhaustive study of the country's wine regions, finally deciding to settle in the central-southern area of Chile, specifically in Bulnes, in the southern sector of the Itata Valley. There, he began producing various alcohols, such as fruit distillates, liqueurs, and wines, perfecting their recipes through his experience and knowledge. Inspired by European tradition, he decided to patent his work and establish his own family business, giving rise to Viña Männle. Today, alongside his family and with the help of his son Martin Männle, they continue the German tradition, crafting high-quality wines and maintaining a deep respect for the vineyards of the Itata Valley and the work of the local people.
Vineyards
Currently, Viña Männle sources grapes from three geographically diverse areas in the Itata Valley, each with unique characteristics in terms of climate, soil, grape varieties, and viticultural practices. This diversity allows them to produce a wide range of wines with different characteristics and expressions.
Magdalena Alto - Coelemu
Viticulturist: Juan Esteban Arteaga
The vineyard is located in the Magdalena Alto area, in the Coelemu commune, in the coastal dryland of the Itata Valley, 480 km south of Santiago and only 24 km from the Pacific Ocean. The vines are planted on gentle hills with clay soils at an altitude of 300 m above sea level. They are cultivated on their own rootstock and trained using head-trained systems. This vineyard is exclusively rainfed, without any additional irrigation system, resulting in wines with a rich aromatic expression and a vibrant acidity due to its coastal Mediterranean climate. Annual rainfall is 700-800 mm. Grape varieties planted: Muscat of Alexandria and Cinsault, with an age ranging from 50 to 80 years and a yield per hectare of 5,000 and 6,000 kilograms respectively.
Quinchamalí - Chillán
Viticulturist: Ricardo Vásquez
Quinchamalí is a small town located in the Ñuble Region, 30 km southwest of the city of Chillán, on the way to Huape. Annual rainfall is 700-800 mm. The vineyard, covering only 5 hectares, is situated in the Caserío de Linares area, within the intermediate depression of the Itata Valley. It features gentle slopes that receive sunlight throughout the day, creating an ideal microclimate for optimal grape ripening. During ripening, the average temperature reaches 24°C. Sustainable viticulture is practiced here, aiming to care for the environment and preserve the local soils. Grape harvesting and selection are done manually, and the vineyard's crop load is kept at a medium-low level, contributing to wines with great aromatic expression and concentration. Grape varieties planted: Syrah, Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.
Viñedo La Esperanza - Larqui Maule - Chillán Viejo
Viticulturists: Heinrich Männle and Martin Männle
This vineyard, with over 70 years of history, is located in the southern part of the Itata Valley, a few meters from the Larqui River, and was previously part of the Santa Cruz de Larqui estate in Chillán Viejo. It is situated on gentle slopes resting on loamy soils with a composition of clay and traces of volcanic origins. The wind favors ventilation, and the warm temperatures in summer range from 33°C during the day to 15°C at night. Annual rainfall is 700-800 mm. Grape varieties planted: País, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Pinot Noir, and in smaller quantities, Sémillon, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. Many of the varieties are mixed among the 6 parcels of the vineyard, giving rise to "field blend" wines and others that are selected by grape variety.
