History
With over 130 years of tradition, Viña Undurraga is a pioneer in Chilean winemaking. Its history dates back to 1885 when its founder, Don Francisco Undurraga Vicuña, a visionary entrepreneur, decided to plant 30 blocks of vineyards on the Santa Ana de Talagante estate, in the heart of the Maipo Valley. These vines were personally brought from Europe, mainly from the Rhine region in Germany and the Bordeaux region in France.
In 1891, Viña Undurraga achieved its first harvest, and from 1900 onward, it began a steady growth that led to becoming the first Chilean winery to export wines to the United States in 1903, and later to Latin America in 1930.
In 1975, Viña Undurraga diversified its production by venturing into the making of sparkling wines, and since then, it has positioned itself as a reference in the sparkling wine industry. In 1997, they built Nave 20, equipped with state-of-the-art tanks, becoming one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the region.
In 2006, the Undurraga family decided to sell the winery to the Picciotto and Yuraszeck families. This brought in a new line of professionals and a significant investment in purchasing fields in Chile's main wine regions, such as Leyda, Maipo, and Maule, along with the modernization of the winemaking facilities.
The winemaking work led by Rafael Urrejola has gained worldwide recognition for the exceptional quality, character, innovation, and consistency of its wines. Each of its wine lines expresses the identity and quality of the vineyards, along with a commitment to sustainable practices, the environment, and the community.
Currently, Viña Undurraga has a wide portfolio of brands present in more than 70 countries across five continents and is part of the Pacific Wines Group (GVP).
Vineyards
Across an approximate total area of 1,200 hectares, Undurraga carries out its agricultural activity on estates exclusively dedicated to the cultivation and production of the finest wine grapes. These estates are located in the Leyda, Maipo, and Maule valleys.
Lomas de Leyda Estate - Leyda Valley, San Antonio
Situated 90 km west of Santiago and 14 km from the Pacific Ocean, specifically on the western slope of the Coastal Range, this estate is characterized by excellent soil conditions and maritime influence due to its proximity to the sea. Ocean breezes and coastal fog create a cold climate that extends during the growing season, with summer temperatures reaching up to 25°C. These conditions result in slow ripening and the development of intense and fresh flavors. Among the red varieties, Pinot Noir and Syrah are found, while notable white varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Gris, and Viognier.
Santa Ana Estate - Maipo
Valley Located in the heart of the Maipo Valley, near the city of Talagante in the Metropolitan Region. This valley is internationally recognized for its perfect climate for the production of red wines. The soils are of alluvial origin and possess a mixture of sandy-clay textures with a significant presence of stones, providing excellent vineyard drainage and optimizing its vigor and yield. Some of the red grape varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Syrah, and in whites, Chardonnay.
Codigua Estate - Maipo Valley
Situated in the locality of the same name in the Melipilla commune, notable red varieties include Carménère, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Among whites, there are varieties such as Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon.
Cauquenes Estate - Maule Valley
Located 350 km south of Santiago, in the Maule region. Summers are warm and dry with average temperatures reaching 32°C and cool nights around 11°C. Autumn is cold and humid with precipitation levels ranging from 700 mm to 1000 mm. Prominent red varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carménère, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Carignan, Tempranillo, and Mourvèdre. Among white varieties are Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne.
