History
Viu Manent is a Chilean winery owned by the Viu family. Its origins date back to 1935 when Catalan immigrant Miguel Viu García and his two sons, Agustín and Miguel Viu Manent, founded Bodegas Viu in Santiago de Chile, dedicated to the trade and bottling of wines for the local market under the brand "Vinos Viu".
The winery is situated in the heart of the Colchagua Valley and produces fine wines with Designation of Origin, mainly sourced from its three vineyards located in this valley. Viu Manent has vineyards with Malbec vines over 100 years old and is a pioneer in the production of Chilean Malbec, being the first winery to produce and label this grape variety in Chile in 1993. Currently, it is led by José Miguel Viu Bottini, who has been responsible for guiding the winery into export markets worldwide, solidifying the brand as a producer of high-end wines, and developing wine tourism in Colchagua. In 2023, it was internationally recognized as one of the top 50 vineyards in the world to visit.
Vineyards
San Carlos
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Santa Cruz area. This corresponds to the original and oldest vineyard of the company. It was established in the mid-19th century with pre-phylloxera vines brought from France. The planted area covers 150 hectares, with century-old vines of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, among other varieties. The soil is sandy clay, porous, with good drainage and very deep. Grape varieties planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese for reds; and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Viognier for whites.
La Capilla
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Peralillo area. In the search for new terroirs within the valley that would contribute richness and special characteristics to the grapes, Viu Manent acquired this property in 1990 and dedicated it to complete planting, carrying out significant soil preparation and technified irrigation works. It covers an area of 50 hectares. The soil is shallow, with excellent drainage and low fertility in sands, resulting in distinct and characterful wines. Grape varieties planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, and Malbec.
El Olivar
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Peralillo area. Acquired in 1999, this estate spans 325 hectares and includes plantations on hillside slopes with poorer and better-draining soils, allowing for the production of wines with great personality. Today, it has 70 hectares of vineyards in production, with a maximum expansion plan to 150 hectares of vineyard. Grape varieties planted: Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.
