OUTSTANDING RANGE

TARA - Ventisquero Wine Estates

The prize for the best line of wines was difficult to decide. There were several other serious contenders to consider. However, the Tara project is one that has impressed me for a long time and continues to go from strength to strength. Something that distinguishes Tara is the tenacity and commitment of the Ventisquero team to develop this terroir in the midst of considerably adverse circumstances. It is certainly not a vain project, but one that has required both financial and practical investment.

Located in the Huasco Valley in the Atacama Desert, the Tara project has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary of production. Although there is practically no rain in this place, it has been described as a desert with a cool climate due to the proximity of the cold Pacific Ocean that moderates temperatures. With no rainfall, irrigation is of course vital and has been a challenge throughout the project. The soils are extremely saline, even being up to 10 times the amount that the vines can actually tolerate. Therefore, the pure fresh water from the nearby Huasco River plays a fundamental role in cleaning the soils and in the prosperous development of the vines. The team has struggled to understand how best to achieve this, and it is a testament to their hard work and adaptation that they have succeeded in this goal.

They are wines that really speak of their place of origin; while they have shown progression and subtle changes over the past decade, they have always remained true to their identity. The aging has gradually changed and evolved, with the use of foudres and concrete eggs adding a sense of purity. The characteristic salinity in all the wines remains constant and really sets them apart as particularly gastronomic wines. Which is probably why these unique wines are included in some of the best restaurants in the world.

The Chardonnay, for me, has always been the standout wine in the portfolio, but over time the Pinot Noir is really starting to shine, and the 2021 is the best vintage I've ever tasted. The inclusion of Tara Sauvignon Blanc is extremely welcome and it is one of the best Chilean Sauvignon I have tasted. Winemaker Alejandro Galaz is superbly showcasing all of his talent and experience in this wonderfully imaginative project.
