PROJECT OF NOTE

Viña Dagaz

I first tasted Dagaz wines with Marco Puyo for the latest edition of the wine guide in 2019. I was instantly impressed with the entire range and how remarkable these wines were, especially considering they were first commercial releases. Subsequently, I wrote an article for Decanter magazine in 2020 focused on future iconic wines from South America, and Dagaz Tierras de Pumanque was one of the 10 wines I chose.

Marco's knowledge of the Colchagua Valley is unmatched. He worked for some of Chile's most renowned wineries, including Los Vascos and San Pedro, where he gained in-depth knowledge of the area. In 2005, Marco discovered a unique 39-hectare site in Pumanque, which he subsequently acquired with business partners. Just 34 km from the coast, this granitic vineyard sits on rolling hills, which benefit from a significant cooling coastal influence. The vines were planted in 2005, the first commercial launches were in 2016 and the winery was completed in 2018. 20 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Syrah and Petit Verdot have been planted.

The range of wines from the vineyard that we tasted for 2023 includes Granito Estate Carménère, Granito Cabernet Sauvignon, Kolwe Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Tierras de Pumanque, the vineyard's flagship wine. In addition to these, it also has a Cinsault from Guarilihue in Itata. The consistency across the range is impressive, and all the wines exude class. The characteristic that stands out in all of them is the remarkable management of tannins that Marco achieves, soft, round and elegant tannins, which provide a wonderful structure to the wines. It is clear that this vineyard is truly a special place and Marco clearly knows how to bring out the best in it and express it in the wines. I hope to see Dagaz grow and become a benchmark for premium wines in Colchagua.
